Britain to Send More Troops to Northern IrelandBritain announced on Friday to send 1,600 more troops to Northern Ireland for potential trouble next month.The British Army said on Friday that some soldiers had already arrived and the rest were due next week, bringing the number of troops backing up the police there to more than 15,000. The decision was made before the recent spate of sectarian violence in Belfast. The police in Northern Ireland also borrowed two water cannons from Belgium to subdue growing violence between Protestants and Catholics on the streets of Belfast. Police and soldiers restored calm in the flashpoint Ardoyne area of north Belfast on Friday morning after a second night of sectarian rioting. The violence erupted as government ministers from London and Dublin met for talks at Hillsborough Castle near Belfast on Friday to get the province's peace process back on track after a long dispute over guerrilla disarmament. |
