Serious Locust Plague Breaks Out in Hebei

Many places in Hebei Province, north China, have been hit by a serious locust plague, due to years of drought in coastal and lake regions, according to the agricultural department of the province.

Migratory locusts have damaged 220,000 hectares of land, with an estimated 5,000 locusts found in each square meter of land at the maximum, officials said.

Two planes are operating to help fight the pests and biological pesticides will be used to wipe out locusts in water areas to protect the quality of water.

The provincial government has set aside 10 million yuan (1.2 million U.S. dollars) for the campaign.
