Ethiopian Leader Loses Membership in OPDO Central CommitteeEthiopian President Negaso Gidada lost his membership Friday in the Central Committee of the Oromo People's Democratic Organization (OPDO) Friday, the official Ethiopian News Agency reported. The OPDO said in a statement that its central committee was forced to sack Negaso from his membership because he "opted for anti-democratic ways to distract the activities of the organization," ENA reported. The OPDO is one of the organizations that comprise the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front, an alliance that also includes Amhara National Democratic Movement, the Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Front and the Tigray People 's Liberation Front. On Friday afternoon, Negaso walked out of a regular meeting of the ruling alliance after "verbally renouncing his membership in the EPRDF council," citing pressure imposed on him at the conference. The OPDO central committee accused Negaso of "supporting and cooperating" with the faction group that dissented recently from the Tigray People's Liberation Front, ENA said. Ethiopian state radio reported earlier that Negaso has resigned as the country's president, but that report has not been officially confirmed.
