Science, Technology Primary Productive Forces: JiangJiang Zemin, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the state president, has emphasized that science and technology are the primary productive forces and the centralized embodiment and main symbol of advanced productive forces.
Jiang made this remark Friday at the inaugural session of the Sixth National Congress of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST).
Also present at the opening were Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing.
In his speech, the Chinese leader called for incisively taking hold of the general situation of the current development of science and technology and making a complete assessment of the great importance of the future development of science and technology for human society.
Efforts should be made to open up a new situation in China's booming science and technological sector, through increasing the urgency and sense of hardship, targeting the advanced level of science and technology in the world, closely linking it with China 's realities in development, trying every means to catch up, and be determined to make progress, Jiang stressed.
Highlighting that the issue of science and technology is an important part of the work of the Party and the government, he urged local Party committees and governments at different levels to try their best to guide, support, administrate and serve scientific and technological progress and innovation, so as to bring into full play the important role of science and technology in pushing forward economic development and social progress, and safeguarding state security.
In the speech, Jiang called for relying on scientific and technological innovation, encouraging original innovation, and advocating the scientism, which represents the soul of people's quality in science and culture, he stressed.
The CAST is a non-government organization and group of scientists under the leadership of the Party, Jiang said, adding that the CAST is an important force for pushing forward the development of science and technology in the country.
During the Sixth Congress of the CAST, which will last for four days, the participants will discuss and approve a work report by the Fifth National Committee of the CAST, revise the constitution of the association, and elect the new leadership of the body.
