Shanghai Cooperation Organization Conducive to Regional Conflict Prevention: Chinese AmbassadorA senior Chinese diplomat said Thursday that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is a new model in boosting regional cooperation in preventing conflict and fighting terrorism, separatism and extremism and other factors threatening peace and security in the region.Wang Yingfan, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks at an open U.N. Security Council consultation on the prevention of conflict. "The SCO creates a new model of the regional cooperation characterized by joint initiative by states, big or small, taking security as a top priority, mutual benefit and coordination," Wang said. Meanwhile, the SCO fosters a "Shanghai Spirit" that stresses the inter-state trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for pluralism in civilization, and common development, he said. "This also represents an important initiative to establish a regional conflict prevention mechanism against terrorism, separatism and extremism which are detrimental to regional security," he added. On June 15, presidents of China, Russia and four Central Asian countries launched the SCO, a new regional body to promote peace, stability and economic and trade ties.
