Beijing Party Chief Meets Former Mexican President

Jia Qinglin, secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee, met Friday with former Mexican president Luis Echeverria Alvarez.

Jia, who is also a member of Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee, said that as an old friend of the Chinese people, Echeverria has made remarkable contribution to the promotion of Sino-Mexico relations.

Echeverria said that this is his seventh visit to China and he really appreciates the marked achievements China has made in such a short time.

Echeverria is here at the invitation of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC).

On June 18, CPAFFC conferred the title of "People's Envoy of Friendship" to Echeverria.

Echeverria will attend the concert of the Three Tenors (Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo), held in the Forbidden City here Saturday, which falls as the Olympic Day.
