Number of Applicants for Studying in Canada Doubles

Statistics from the Canadian Embassy in China show that in the first five months of 2001, the number of applicants for visas to go to study in Canada reached 8,486 , doubling that of the same period last year.

The Canadian Embassy in China alone will possibly receive over 20,000 applications by the end of 2001, much higher than earlier anticipated. Although the Canadian immigration department has kept sending visa officials to Beijing, which, however, remains hard to keep up with the increasing number of applicants, said president of the Canadian Chinese-student immigrants center.

According to the Canadian Embassy in China, at present, it takes from 2.5 months to 5 months to handle such applications. For those student applicants who have passed the TOEFL test at home and are qualified for undergraduate courses in Canadian universities, the embassy will first handle their visa-applications, and try its best to handle applications handed in before July 1, 2001 and finish handling them and issue visas before September 1, 2001. And it will take about four months to examine and verify other applications and to issue visas.
