1 Killed, 6 Injured in Blast at Central Russian Nuke Fuel Plant

One person was killed and six others wounded by a blast at a nuclear and mechanical plant in central Russia's Udmurtia Republic on Thursday, the Russian Nuclear Energy Ministry said.

The explosion at the Chepetsky Mechanical Plant, which belongs to the Russian Nuclear Energy Ministry and produces depleted uranium, was caused by "violations of safety rules while working with powder-like and granulated materials," the ministry press service said.

The blast occurred at the plant's section where calcium metal is produced, killing one person on the spot and injuring six others, the press service said.

However, "there is no radioactive, chemical contamination or fire in the plant. The ecological situation is normal," it stated.

A commission of specialists and a group of investigators from the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Udmurtia are currently working at the accident scene.
