Shandong Aspires to Become Leading Software Producer

The eastern Chinese province of Shandong is making ambitious plans to promote its software industry, which witnessed a surprising annual increase of over 50 percent in the past two years, a senior government official said Thursday.

According to the plan, the province's software sales will reach 25 billion yuan (3 billion US dollars) by 2005, or one tenth of the domestic software market.

Last year, the province's software industry grew at a faster rate than that of information and electronic products for the first time.

The province had planned to set up ten software parks and develop 4 to 5 big software enterprises with each having an annual revenue of over 1 billion yuan (120 million US dollars).

The province is speeding up the building of the Qilu Software Park, one of the nation's key software bases, which is expected to see the settlement of 100 software companies with a total annual sales revenue of over 10 billion yuan (1.2 billion US dollars) by 2005.
