Texas Mother Admits to Drowning Her Five Children: Police

A mother in her thirties has admitted to drowning her five children in the family's home in Houston, Texas, the local police said Wednesday.

"There were four children on the bed. They were dead at the scene," said Houston police spokesman John Canno, describing the scene when the police arrived. A fifth sibling was found dead in the bathtub, in the bathroom next to the bedroom, he said.

The police did not give the name of the woman, but said she was 36. The children ranged in age from six months to seven years old and appeared to have drowned in a bathtub. An autopsy will be conducted by the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office.

She had admitted to drowning her children, he said. She was arrested and taken to a Houston police station.

"It is hard to imagine what happened," Canno said, brushing away tears.

He added that it had been the mother herself who alerted the police to what she had done.
