Construction of Gas Pipeline Starts in Hebei

Construction of a gas pipeline, the first ever in this north China's Hebei Province, has recently started.

The 202-kilometer pipeline involves an accumulated investment of 390 million yuan.

Upon completion in September, it will become part of a 14.5 billion U.S. dollar pipeline project, which is expected to be able to transfer 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually from the Tarim Basin in the central Asian region of Xinjiang to Shanghai on the coast by 2005.

The Tarim Basin, with a natural gas reserve of 84,000 cubic meters, possesses about one-fourth of the total land natural gas resources in China.
