Chinese, Thai Defense Ministers Hold Talks

Chinese and Thai defense ministers said Thursday in Beijing that the two sides will work together to further their close and friendly cooperation.

Chi Haotian, Chinese defense minister and also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, held talks with Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, deputy prime minister and minister of defense of Thailand.

Chi said Sino-Thai relationship is one of the best among China' s relations with countries of the Association of the Southeast Asian Nations. He said the relations between China and Thailand have always been developing smoothly since the establishment of diplomatic ties 26 years ago.

The relationship between China and Thailand has become a good example of relations between countries of different social systems, Chi said.

China will never forget the support given by the Thai government concerning Taiwan, Tibet, human rights, and the Falun Gong issue, he said.

Chi noted that China is willing to work with Thailand to further bilateral cooperation.

Chi said that he is satisfied with the military relations between the two countries, adding that with concerted efforts on both sides, the two militaries have had good cooperation in various areas, which has generated positive impact on the further development of bilateral ties and on the security of the region.

Chavalit said the two militaries have always maintained close and friendly ties and such relationship is getting ever more closer.

He said that the two militaries have had frequent high-level visits and the bilateral cooperation continues to expand.

Chavalit suggested that the two sides should establish some mechanisms for regular military exchange and cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.

Prior to the talks, Chi held a welcome ceremony for Chavalit.

Chavalit arrived in the Chinese capital on Wednesday on an official goodwill visit to China at the invitation of Chi.
