Representatives of Overseas Chinese Groups Meet in BeijingOver 200 leaders of organizations of overseas Chinese and foreign nationals of Chinese origin, from 60 foreign countries and regions, and over 100 representatives of government departments concerned gathered here Wednesday, at a get- together sponsored by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the China Overseas Exchanges Association.Vice-Premier Qian Qichen addressed the meeting, saying that in the 20th century, China witnessed enormous changes and in the 21st century, the Chinese Nation will achieve a great rejuvenation. When China enters the World Trade Organization (WTO), its market will become even more open, with its laws and investment environment further improved, which will bring about unprecedented business opportunities to foreigners as well as overseas compatriots, he said. The Chinese government welcomes overseas Chinese and foreigners of Chinese origin to share the various new opportunities brought about by China's participation in the globalization and its modernization drive, Qian noted. The vice-premier reiterated that in the new century, the peaceful reunification of the two sides of the Taiwan Straits is the strong aspiration of the entire Chines people and a firm will of all Chinese at home and overseas. Qian thanked overseas compatriots for their efforts for the great cause of China's reunification. Luo Haocai, a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, attended the meeting. |
