East China Province Solicits More Overseas Investment for Agriculture

East China's Jiangxi Province plans to use more overseas investment to upgrade the province's farming industry.

Wu Zaiqian, an official in charge of overseas investment with the provincial government, said the agricultural province has absorbed 300 million U.S. dollars' worth of overseas funds since the mid-1980s.

He said the figure is relatively small for the province, a big agricultural area, but both domestic and foreign investments in Jianxi's farming sector have been increasing rapidly recently.

He said the figure includes nearly 200 million U.S. dollars worth of preferential loans from foreign governments, and more than 100 million U.S. dollars in direct overseas investment in 214 projects.

The province plans to solicit investment for nearly 300 agricultural projects in a bid to promote agricultural development through the use of foreign investment.

Investment from other provinces, such as neighboring Guangdong, Fujian and Zhejiang, has totaled 4.2 billion yuan in the past five years.
