Guangdong Posts 21 Percent Growth in Customs Revenue

Revenue collected by Customs in South China's Guangdong Province, the richest province in the country, increased by 5 billion yuan to 28.26 billion yuan, or 21. 5 percent, during the first five months.

According to statistics released by local Customs, the figure accounts for 28.3 percent of China's total customs revenue for the same period.

Of the figure, duties total 10.2 billion yuan, up 18.2 percent, and import duties reached 18.24 billion yuan, an increase of 23.4 percent.

Customs officials attribute the sharp increase primarily to continued efforts made by the central and local governments to crack down on smuggling, and the rapid development of export- oriented high-tech industries.
