Chinese NPC Chairman Meets ROK Prime MinisterLi Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, said Wednesday that China will, as always, support the efforts of the two sides of the Korean Peninsula to improve their relations.In a meeting with Prime Minister Lee Han-Dong of the Republic of Korea (ROK), Li said that China has always been committed to maintaining the peace and stability of the peninsula and that policy will never change. Li said the summit meeting between the two sides of the peninsula last year was an important event, which has greatly promoted and improved the relations between the two sides. China hopes the momentum will continue, Li added. Li said that China also expects relevant countries will do more to promote the coming together between the two sides of the Korea Peninsula. On Sino-ROK ties, Li said China has always attached importance to its relations with the ROK and is willing to work with the ROK side to develop comprehensive friendly cooperation. Lee said that Li's previous visit to his country was a success, adding that the visit has strengthened the contacts between the two parliaments, enhanced the friendship between the two peoples, and pushed forward bilateral friendship and cooperation. Lee said bilateral cooperation has been expanding since the two countries forged diplomatic ties in 1992. The ROK believes that there is still great potential in bilateral cooperation, Lee said, adding that his country wishes to join hands with China to bring the bilateral cooperation into a new stage. Lee also briefed the Chinese side on the recent development of the improvement of relations between the two sides in the Korea Peninsula. He said that the ROK will continue its peacemaking policy and take an active role in promoting the dialogue and cooperation between the South and the North. The ROK highly appreciates China's contribution in promoting the stability of the peninsula and the peace between the South and the North, Lee said. Lee arrived in the Chinese capital Tuesday on a working visit as guest of his Chinese counterpart Zhu Rongji.
