Seventh HSK to Be Held in UNSW

As learned from the Chinese Department of the University of New South Wales, Australia the seventh Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) will be held in the very University on the coming October 20.

Guided by China National HSK Committee and designed by HSK Center of Beijing Language and Culture University, the HSK is the most authoritative Chinese proficiency test, which is well received by the students and employers of different countries across the world.

Started from 1990, HSK has been given at 35 test sites in 19 countries and regions with 14,200 students taking part in the tests. Besides, in the past 10 years, about 250,000 persons came to China to learn Chinese, which is 34.7 times that of the total number of students to China in 1950s and 1960s, also 4.5 times of that of the 1980s. China has set up test sites in 20 inland cities and Hong Kong SAR.

Nowadays, much attention has been paid to Chinese teaching by many governments, educational departments and overseas Chinese organizations. In Australia, the government even popularizes Chinese in public high schools and primary schools as one of the top foreign language. In addition, the Chinese weekend schools sponsored by overseas Chinese also grow rapidly which has brought about an unprecedented development in Chinese teaching.

So far, China has established two test sites in Melbourne and Sydney of Australia. The HSK has been held once a year in Melbourne since 1993. In Sydney, the test has been carried out six times since 1995.

Persons in charge claimed that the students qualified in the tests will obtain the "HSK certificate" issued by China National HSK Committee. The certificate can be regarded as a verification for their Chinese proficiency to apply for a further study in college or university in China, a certificate to show their level in Chinese proficiency or to be exempted from studying Chinese of a relevant level, or a passport to look for a job in related companies or institutions.
