Bulgarian Ex-King's Party Yet to Form Team to Discuss Coalition

Bulgaria's Simeon II National Movement (SNM), which won a landslide victory in Sunday's parliamentary elections, is yet to come up with a team to hold talks with other political forces on the formation of a coalition government, a senior party official told reporters Monday.

"We have about one month before the 39th National Assembly (parliament) convenes, during which we shall carefully consider our policy," Georgi Petkanov said.

Simeon II, the former king of Bulgaria, said on Sunday night that his two-month-old party will seek a broad coalition, but he did not specify the political forces he intended to coalesce with.

According to preliminary results, the SNM won 120 seats in the 240-member parliament, the ruling United Democratic Forces secured 51 seats, the opposition Socialist Party 48 and the ethnic Turks' Movement for Rights and Freedoms 21.

Under Bulgaria's constitution, the president convenes the first session of the newly elected parliament within one month following the election.

If the president fails to do so within the stipulated time, the legislature is to be convened by one fifth of the MPs under the law.
