Power Plant in Central China Launches Technology Upgrade Project

Approved by the State Council, a major technology upgrade project was initiated Monday at the Zhuzhou Power Plant in Hunan Province.

The project involves installation of two 300,000 kw generating sets to replace the province's 22 years old generators with a total generating capacity of 610,900 kw.

The power plant is located in the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan region, where electricity demands make up 40 percent of the province's total.

The installation of new generators will strengthen power support in the area and alleviate pollution caused by the old generators, said a local economic official.

The new generators will save 900,000 tons of coal for thermal power generating, the official said.

With an investment of 2.25 billion yuan from the Hunan Huayin Power Company, the project will be completed in early 2004.

The first phase of the plant's technology upgrade project was completed at the end of 1994 with the installation of two sets of generators totaling a generating capacity of 125,000 kw.
