Shanghai Unicom Selects Bell, Lucent as Partners in CDMA

China's second largest telecommunications operator, Unicom, has selected Shanghai Bell and Lucent Technology as its partners in the building of a CDMA mobile telecommunications network in the eastern city of Shanghai.

By a 1-billion-yuan contract signed here Monday, Shanghai Unicom will adopt the solution offered by Bell and Lucent in the building of its CDMA system.

Industrial sources said the signing of the contract marks that the building of Shanghai's CDMA system has entered a substantive stage.

According to Unicom sources, the Shanghai CDMA system will use the CDMA technology of the U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc., which is known for its big capacity, high quality telecommunications, small disturbances, and the potential of it possibly of being upgraded into the third generation CDMA.

The Shanghai CDMA system will also support international roaming, short news, WAP and high speed wireless data transfer, said the sources.
