Macao Students Keen on China's Interior Universities

An increasing number of Macao students are eyeing the study opportunities at China's interior universities.

Jinan University and South China Normal University held enrollment examinations here Monday, which will be followed by 72 other institutions of higher learning from China's interior this year.

Statistics show that 40 percent of Macao's 2900 high school graduates have applied for China's inland universities. Among their ten top choices, five are in the neighboring Guangdong Province, three in Shanghai, one in Beijing and one in Zhejiang.

Guangdong's universities are attractive for Macao students due to the advantages of short distance and similar dialect and living habits between the two places, said Lei Pui Lam, vice-president of the Macao Educational Association.

The increasing number of students applying for Shanghai's universities shows that the exchanges between Macao and Shanghai are becoming closer amid Shanghai's rapid development, he added.

He attributed the competitiveness of the interior universities to the improvement of academic level, the diversification of disciplines and the relatively low fees.

The majority of Macao students have chosen the majors of education, medical science, foreign language, computer, electronics and business management, to cater to the fast-growing sectors in Macao.
