In a written statement, Wu said his visit is aimed at promoting bilateral relations and economic and trade relations in particular.

Sino-German relations have been progressing smoothly in recent years, Wu said.

He noted that mutual understanding between the peoples and leaders of the two countries is ever deepening, mutual beneficial cooperation in such fields as economy, trade, science, technology, culture and education ever expanding and invigorating, while consultation and cooperation in international affairs and organizations are ever-strengthening.

China is pleased with the good development of bilateral relations and fully confident on future broad prospects of the bilateral relations, he added.

Wu said Germany, as a big EU nation, is China's important partner in Europe and that the further development of bilateral relations in all aspects conforms with the basic and long-term interests of the two countries and benefits the world peace and stability as well.

During the visit, Wu is planned to meet Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and other German leaders as well as business representatives.
