Somali Southern Port Town Forms New Local Administration

The local authorities in the troubled southern port town of Kismaio, 500 kilometers south of Somali capital city of Mogadishu, Monday announced the formation of a new local administration for the district.

The formation of this administration, the first of its kind in Somalia, followed a large meeting between elders and intellectuals from over 11 clans living together in and around the district.

According to Abdurahman Haji Ahmed Waldireh, spokesman for the Jubba Valley Alliance that controls Kismaio town, the meeting culminated to the formation of an 11-member council for Kismaio and the new administration effectively started its work on Monday.

Dahir Mohamed Elmi, belonging to the Marehan clan, has been appointed as the new district commissioner of the town. The three deputies in the finance, social affairs and the resettlement of the refugees have also been named.

Waldireh said that the formation of the council is based on the directives of the political strategy of the Transitional National Government and made in respect to the self-governance of the districts and regions of Somalia as stated by the transitional charter of the government.
