China's Top Academy for Ethnic Studies Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Nearly 10,000 students and teachers with the Beijing-based Central University for Nationalities, China's top academy for students with minority ethnic backgrounds, celebrated the university's 50th birthday on June 16.

Chinese Vice-premier Li Lanqing sent a letter of congratulation to the university, In which Li called on the university to train more students from different ethnic groups and offer more intellectual support for development in areas inhabited by minority nationalities.

Li is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee.

Over the past five decades, over 60,000 students of different minority nationalities have graduated from the university. A large number of the graduates have become specialists and scholars playing a major role in the development of the ethnic minority regions.

At present, about 85 percent of the total 8,000 students now studying at the university are from minority nationalities.
