Two Hostages Freed in Southern Philippines

Two Filipino hostages held by the Abu Sayyaf rebels in the southern province of Basilan have been released after three weeks of ordeal. The two, identified as Francis Ganzon and Kimberly Jao, arrived at the Villamor air base in Manila at about 5:30 pm on June 16 (0930 GMT) from Isabela, capital of Basilan, on board a military plane and were driven to the presidential palace to meet the president.

New Expressway Built in East China

A new expressway connecting five cities in east China's Shandong Province was opened to traffic on June 16, five months ahead of schedule. The 389-kilometer expressway, with a total investment of 11 billion yuan (about 1.3 billion US dollars), is part of the Beijing-Fuzhou expressway, a national artery which is under construction. Fuzhou is the capital city of Fujian Province also in east China

US-Russian Summit Kicks off in Slovenia

US President George W. Bush and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin kicked off their debut summit meeting on June 16 in an effort to stabilize relations between their two countries. The meeting, which is expected to take about two hours, is held at Brdo Castle, about 25 kilometers north of the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana. The summit is also attended by the U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov.
