Vice-President Emphasizes CPC Working Style

Vice-President Hu Jintao has called for intensified efforts to improve the style of work of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the new century, saying this concerns the trend of public feeling and the future of the Party.

Hu is also a member of the Political Bureau Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission.

During his recent inspection tour to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China from June 8 to 16, Hu said that to speed up economic development, consolidate the unity of various nationalities and maintain social stability, work must be done to strengthen the building of the Party's style of work.

As for the region's development, Hu said Xinjiang should seize the opportunity of the central government's implementation of the western development strategy and try to turn its advantage in resources into actual economic benefits.

In the agriculture and animal husbandry sector, Hu said Xinjiang should focus on the production of special local products like cotton and fruits and realize an industrialized management, while maintaining its capacity in grain production.

Efforts are also needed to vigorously develop water-saving agriculture so as to improve the overall performance of the sector, he added.

Despite Xinjiang's achievements in improving local infrastructure over the past few years, Hu asked for continued effort to accelerate infrastructure construction, with emphasis placed on building water conservancy and transport facilities and energy projects.

He also suggested that Xinjiang, as a frontier area, further promote border trade, open up the international market and make good use of foreign resources.

He told local officials that in the process of economic development, they must mobilize and protect the initiative of the masses, protect the ecological environment for sustainable development, and do everything possible to improve the people's living standard.

He also emphasized the unity of various nationalities of the country and the unification of the motherland, saying this serves as the foundation for maintaining stability in Xinjiang.

He urged that work must be done to strengthen the administration of religious affairs according to law. Effective measures should be taken to protect the normal religious activities of the people, and resolutely curb illegal activities carried out in the name of religion. Stringent measures must be adopted to crack down on separatists for their activities to sabotage national unity.

Hu spoke highly of the work of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and asked them to play a major role in promoting economic development and maintaining stability in Xinjiang.

He also called for the buildup of a contingent of politically qualified cadres of both the Han nationality and minority nationalities, saying this is the key to Xinjiang's reform, development and stability.
