SADC Concludes Meeting on Water CooperationWater can serve as a good vehicle for advancing regional cooperation and economic integration if it is managed and developed in an equitable and reasonable manner, said the Southern African Development Community(SADC) Friday.In a communique issued by SADC's Sectoral Committee of Ministers of Water after its sixth annual meeting in Harare, the organization said water must be managed in a manner that ensures sustainable development and sound environmental protection It said the region is faced with many challenges such as inadequate water supply and the shortage of sanitation coverage and spread of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Delegates expressed concern at the extreme temporary variations of the region's water resources and cyclic floods and droughts which have been occurring with increasing intensity over the past decade. The meeting was attended by all SADC member states with the exception of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius and Seychelles.
