At least 80 Angolan refugees have entered Zambia through Shangombo District in the Western Province over the past three weeks because of insecurity in the neighboring country, the resident office of the U.N. High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) said Friday.
Some of the refugees have since been registered and settled at Nangweshi refugee camp in Shangombo District, UNHCR officer Sylvester Briggs-Nkpaji said, adding that the latest arrivals have pushed the refugee number at the camp to about 14,000.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of the Western Province Nabiwa Imikendu urged the refugees in the province to desist from selling firearms to local people, which they brought with them from their home country.
He warned that the refugees will have nowhere to live if the their guns are used to cause insecurity in the area.
