China-Europe Association for Technical, Economic Cooperation Set Up

A non-governmental body for technical and economic cooperation between China and Europe, China- Europe Association for Technical and Economic Cooperation (CEATEC), was inaugurated in Beijing Friday evening.

China's chief trade negotiator, Long Yongtu, said the CEATEC could serve as a bridge between Chinese and European enterprises and give a boost to the all-round development of economic and trade relations between the two sides.

With the development of the China-Europe ties, Europe has become an important destination for China's export commodities, and a major source of capital and state-of-the-art technologies, Long said at the inaugural ceremony.

He said there is huge potential in China-Europe cooperation, which calls for the joint efforts of the governments, the business circle and non-governmental organizations in both China and European countries.

Xu Bingjin, president of the CEATEC, said the organization will work to enhance mutual understanding between Chinese and European enterprises and facilitate market access for them by launching seminars, lectures and investigative tours.

Present at the inaugural ceremony were Wang Guangying, vice- chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, Zhao Nanqi, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Shi Guangsheng, minister of foreign trade and economic cooperation.

Ambassador Klaus Ebermann of the European Commission Delegation to China also attended the ceremony, along with some 300 Chinese and European officials and entrepreneurs.
