Chinese City Presents Bell of Friendship to Sister City in US

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of becoming sister city with Los Angeles, the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou on Thursday presented a bell symbolizing harmony and friendship to Los Angeles in a grand ceremony here.

The beautifully made Yong Bell, a replica of a 2,100-year-old bronze bell unearthed in an ancient archeological site in Guangzhou, was formally unveiled by Ren Rongjiang, vice president of the Standing Committee of Guangzhou's People's Congress, at the ceremony held in Chinatown at the heart of Los Angeles.

In her opening remarks, Caroline Ahmanson, chairwoman of the Los Angeles Sister City Committee and vice chairwoman of the National Committee on China-U.S. Relations, paid tributes to the efforts made by the two cities in the past years that have made the smooth development of mutual ties possible.

She believed that the Yong Bell is "an award" to the efforts and expressed the hope that the good ties between the two cities will be kept and further develop in the future.

Ruth Galanter, president of Los Angeles City Council, accepted the bell on behalf of the city of Los Angeles.
