SCO Establishment A Historic Step for Cooperation: Jiang

Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Friday morning that the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) marks a historic step for further cooperation between the six nations of the organization.

Jiang made the remarks at the opening of the summit of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Jiang extended warm welcome to the presidents of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, who came here for the establishment of the SCO.

The SCO will lay a more solid ground for good-neighborly and friendly relationship among the countries, Jiang said.

The six member states are to sign the declaration of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Shanghai pact on crackdown on terrorism, separatism and extremism Friday morning, showing firm willingness to strengthen friendly cooperation and safeguard regional security and stability, Jiang said.
