Iraqi Wounded in US-British Air Raids on Southern Iraq

US and British warplanes bombed recently civilian targets in southern and northern Iraq, a spokesman for the Iraqi army said on Thursday.

The US and British warplanes carried out 14 sorties from Saudi Arabia and 37 sorties from Kuwait and flew over Basra, Zi-Kar, Misan, Mathni, Waset, Kadessia, and Nagav, the Iraqi News Agency quoted the spokesman as saying.

An Iraqi civilian, identified as Mohy Ga'far Olwan, was wounded in the attacks on southern Iraq, he said, without elaborating on when the attacks took place.

U.S. and British warplanes also carried out 20 sorties from Turkey and flew over the provinces of Dohok Arbil and Ninawa in northern Iraq. They attacked civilian facilities in Ninawn in northern Iraq, the spokesman said, without specifying material or human losses.

Since December 1998, the U.S. and British air raids have left 314 Iraqis dead and more than 1,000 others injured.

The Western allies imposed two no-fly zones in northern and southern Iraq in 1991 to allegedly protect the Kurds and Shiite Muslims from attacks by Iraqi government troops.
