Top Legislator Calls for Sound Legal System in Rural Areas
China's top legislator Li Peng Thursday urged a sound legal system should be established in the countryside to promote agricultural restructuring and rural economic development.
Li, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, made the call at the closing ceremony of a four-day symposium attended by legislator in charge of rural affairs from across the country.
He said people's congresses at various levels should push forward agricultural restructuring, protect the legitimate rights of farmers, increase farmers' income and promote the development of agricultural science and technology through legislation and legal supervision.
Li stressed that strengthening legal construction in the rural areas is one of the major tasks when China is carrying out its Tenth Five-Year Plan for 2001-2005.
