Israeli Killed in Shooting Attack South of Jerusalem

An Israeli was killed in a shooting attack Thursday morning on the Tunnel Road, which connects the Gush Etzion settlement bloc in the West Bank with Jerusalem.

Initial reports said two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying two Israelis. The driver was hit and died a short while later. The passenger, who was not injured, opened fire on the two gunmen, killing one of them.

The Israeli army immediately closed the road, which had been shut down on numerous occasions during the current Israeli- Palestinian bloody conflicts as a result of shooting attacks.

Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will convene the inner security cabinet Thursday to review implementation of the ceasefire with the Palestinians which went into effect Wednesday afternoon.

Under the ceasefire plan, the Israeli army must take steps to lift closure on the Palestinian territories while the Palestinians should act to thwart attacks or acts of terror against Israelis.

The Israeli army began implementing the ceasefire Wednesday night by easing restrictions on the movement of Palestinian security forces and transfer of goods and merchandise into the territories from international crossings and points inside the 1967 the Green Line.

There have been two mortar attacks in the Gaza Strip and some shooting incidents in the West Bank and Gaza since the ceasefire took effect. Palestinian officials have said their security forces will not operate outside areas under full Palestinian control.
