Beijing to Build World-Level Micro-electronics Base

Beijing will build, by the year 2010, a micro-electronics industrial base with the most innovative technologies to mass produce integrated circuits.

According to a development plan, in the next 10 years, Beijing will set up 20 large chip production lines which will be part of over 200 integrated circuit design companies and 20 chip encapsulation and testing companies.

Meanwhile, to guarantee the investment, the Beijing municipal government is considering establishing a research and development fund, which is expected to be jointly sponsored by the government, state-owned enterprises, and relevant investing institutes.

Beijing is so far the largest research and development base for electronics and telecommunication devices as well as the largest consuming market of micro-electronics products in China.

It now has two chip production lines and another three are currently under construction.

In February the Beijing municipal government released a series of preferential policies regarding land-use, credit loans and taxes for the development of the micro-electronics industry.
