Chinese Top Legislator Meets Equatorial Guinea Guest

Chinese Top Legislator Meets Equatorial Guinea Guest
Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, met with Salomon Nguema Owono, president of the House of Representatives of the People of Equatorial Guinea Thursday afternoon.

Li said that China and Equatorial Guinea have supported each other and maintained close contact in important international arenas since the two countries forged diplomatic ties over 30 years ago.

He particularly noted that Equatorial Guinea made great contributions to restoring China's legal seat in the 26th General Assembly of the United Nations.

Li expressed gratitude to Equatorial Guinea for its adherence to the One-China stance, for having no official contact with Taiwan, and for its support of China's reunification cause.

He said China has always attached importance to relations with Equatorial Guinea and other African countries.

Li cited the visit to Africa by Chinese President Jiang Zemin in 1996, during which Jiang put forward a five-point proposal on developing Sino-African relations with long-term stability and all- round cooperation.

Li noted that he himself has visited Africa many times, and has been deeply touched by African people's sincerity and hospitality towards Chinese.

The China-Africa Forum of Cooperation -- Beijing Ministerial Meeting held last October has laid a solid foundation for the further development of the relations between China and Africa, he added.

Li stressed China supports efforts by the African countries to develop their national economies, improve regional cooperation and to unite for self-development, adding that China wishes to see a bigger role of Africa in international affairs.

On the relations between the NPC and the House of Representatives of the People of Equatorial Guinea, Li said, the friendly contacts between the two parliaments have helped promote mutual understanding and friendship.

He believes that Salomon's ongoing China visit will strengthen the friendly relations between the two parliaments and the two countries.

Salomon said that visiting China has long been the aspiration of the delegation. And after touring some cities, they all were surprised buy China's vigorous economy.

He reaffirmed that Equatorial Guinea will adhere to the One- China policy, and always treat Taiwan as an inalienable part of China. He also expressed his gratitude for China's aid to Equatorial Guinea.
