Libyan Leader Ghaddafi to Attend OAU Summit

Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi has accepted Zambian President Frederick Chiluba's invitation to attend the 37th summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to be held here next month, the Zambia Information Services (ZIS) said Tuesday.

Ghaddafi, who received the invitation letter Monday presented by Chiluba's special envoy to North Africa Sikota Wina, expressed gratitude to Chiluba for honoring him with the invitation, the ZIS said in a statement.

He asked Wina to convey his assurance to Chiluba that he would attend the Lusaka summit in recognition of the role that the Zambian president had played in the civil war of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

During the Lusaka summit, the OAU will be transformed into the African Union (AU), the brainchild of Ghaddafi.

The pan-African body is loosely based on the European Union, and is due eventually to consist of an executive body, a central bank, a monetary fund, a parliament and a court of justice.
