Multilateral Diplomatic Activities Helpful to Regional, World Development

China's multilateral diplomatic activities will help strengthen the mutual understanding and trust between China and the world, and promote peace, cooperation and development of the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said this at a press conference Tuesday when asked to comment on China's diplomatic activities this year.

As the first year of the new millennium, 2001 has seen China actively engaging in multilateral diplomacy, he said. Sun named the Boao Forum of Asia inaugurated on February 27 in south China's Hainan Province, and the 3rd ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Beijing on May 24-25, participated by foreign ministers from 25 Asian and European countries and the EU Commissioner for External Relations.

Sun noted that there will be more such activities, such as the upcoming Sixth Summit Meeting of the "Shanghai Five" in Shanghai, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) informal leadership meeting scheduled to be held in Shanghai in October, and the official visits by leaders of the APEC member economies before and after the informal meeting.
