Leaders Responsible for Shipwreck Punished

Wu Daofan, mayor of Hechuan City in Chongqing, has been given disciplinary sanction for being lax in enhancing production safety, which was partly attributable to a shipwreck that killed 46 passengers in January this year.

Wu's deputy Liu Chaoqing and 11 other officials of the city government also received administrative punishment of different types for the same reason, together with the head and deputy head of Xiaohe Township, the venue of the tragedy.

The private passenger ship sunk after striking a reef on January 29 due to overloading and dense fog. The ship owner was among the 46 people who died in the accident.
