Major Book on Giant Pandas Published

A major book that is designed to explain the secrets for the existence of giant pandas and offer ways to protect such endangered animals was published early this month by the Beijing University Publishing House.

Pan Wenshi, a leading giant panda expert who is doing field research on animals in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, said the book, with 880 000 Chinese characters, is written based on outdoor scientific expeditions by a team led by Pan into Qinling Ranges, a major natural habitat for giant pandas in northwest China in the past two decades, and research results from the labs.

The book, titled "Chance for Lasting Survival," brings readers the precious data regarding the activity sites of giant pandastheir probability of activities, seasonal migration, routes of expansion home range, mating, production of cubs and looking for food all obtained via testing and inspections by the scientific inspection team in the past two decades.

Pan is now a mentor for students working for doctor's degrees at Beijing University.

The Giant Panda poses a unique challenge to conservationistsfor they are confined in the wild to China. It is one of the rarest animals listed under the state top protection in China.

Great progress has been made since 1979 in protection of giant pandas when the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF, formerly the World Wildlife Fund) joined the Chinese Forestry Administration (formerly Ministry of Forestry) to study and preserve the species.
