US Army Secretary Calls for Radical Changes in ArmyUS Army Secretary Thomas White Tuesday called for a radical change in the army, saying that he is moving ahead with plans to modernize the service.Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki has "a fairly clear vision" for making the Army into a lighter, more mobile force better suited to conflicts expected in the post-Cold War era, White said. "It's my intent to do everything that I can to make that vision a reality," White said when speaking to reporters in the Pentagon. White spoke hours before the Defense Department was to unveil a study on overall transformation among all the services, a study done by one of more than a dozen panels Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld appointed to help him set a course for changes wanted by the Bush administration Foremost among recommendations of the panel are that key weapons programs should go forward and there should be more focus on increasing joint training and joint operations among the services, said a Pentagon official who asked not be identified. As for transformation already under way in the Army, White said officials are working "intensely, on a daily basis" to decide strategy for tomorrow's military. Those efforts will form the basis for decisions on what's needed to carry out the mission, including forces' sizes.
