APEC Science and Technology Industrial Parks Network Meeting HeldThe Fifth Meeting of APEC (Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation) Science and Technology Industrial Parks Network was held in the last two days in Yantai, coastal city of Eastern China's Shandong Province Monday, as part of the current Second APEC Investment Mart. The meeting, which was attended by science and technology park administrators and experts from APEC members including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Vietnam and Russia, is aimed to promote the exchange and cooperation among APEC members in the development of hi-tech industry and high-tech parks in the Information Age, said Jin Ju, deputy director of the International Cooperation Department under the Ministry of Science and Technology. At the meeting, the participants shared their experience in building up Internet and intranet networks in the science parks, as well as administrating and developing hi-tech parks, especially in the fields of policy, talents, infrastructure, and environment. They were of the same opinion that technological innovation has infused these hi-tech parks with new vitality and APEC members should further cooperate in developing these hi-tech parks. The First Meeting of APEC Science and Technology Industrial Parks Network was held in Beijing in 1997. China now has 53 state-level science and technology industrial parks, 10 of which have been elected to open to the APEC members. High-tech parks, with 20,794 enterprises by the end of 2000 so far, have contributed to the key industrial bases for some rising industries such as electronis and information, new materials, new medicine and biological engineering in the country. About 50 percent to 80 percent of program-controlled switchboards, optic fiber and cable, computers and computer peripheral products, software and network products are produced in these parks.
