US, DPRK Resumption of Talks Helpful to Peninsular Situation: FM Spokesman

The Resumption of talks between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will be conducive to the reconciliation, cooperation and development on the Korean Peninsular, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi told Tuesday's press conference.

"We are aware that a delegation of the European Commission recently visited DPRK and established official relations with it," Sun said in response to a relevant question, "This has played a positive role in gearing the Peninsular situation towards a positive direction."

Meanwhile, he said China noticed U.S. President George W. Bush' s recent announcement that his administration has completed a review of its policy toward DPRK and the United States may resume dialogs with DPRK.

Situation on the Korean Peninsular experienced improvement since the historic summit between leaders of the north and the south last year, Sun said, citing enhanced trade volume, family reunions and railway links.

"China firmly supports the alleviation, reconciliation and cooperation between the north and the south on the Korean Peninsular , and we are willing to make positive efforts to promote north-south relations on the Korean Peninsular," he said.

The U.S. new administration took a hard attitude towards the Peninsular, which hindered the momentum of cooperation there, he noted. "We think that the United States constitutes an important factor in the Peninsular situation, and we hope the U.S. and DPRK will resume dialogs," he added.
