"Shanghai Five" Enjoys Bright Future, FM Spokesman

The "Shanghai Five" enjoys a bright future since it is in the fundamental interests of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and complies with the historical trend of peace and development after the Cold War, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi Tuesday.

Sun made the remark at a press conference when asked to comment on the prospect of the "Shanghai Five" mechanism.

Sun said that the "Shanghai Five" is a new cooperative mechanism in the Eurasia continent following the end of the Cold War.

It marks a new beginning of the relationship between China and neighboring countries of Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan since it has greatly improved the mutual trust between the five countries and strongly promoted their cooperative relations in a wide range of fields, noted Sun.

Through this mechanism, the five countries have strengthened their cooperation in fighting terrorism, separatism and extremism, which has helped maintain both regional and international peace, security and stability, said Sun.

Sun also stated that the spirit of the times advocated by the " Shanghai Five", namely, good-neighborliness, mutual trust, equality, mutual benefit, solidarity, cooperation, and common development, has provided precious experience and enlightenment for the international community in abandoning Cold War mentality and exploring new state-to-state relations, new security concepts and new regional cooperative patterns.

The spirit has become an important and positive factor in promoting the process of multipolarization in the world and the establishment of a fair and rational international political and economic new order, added Sun.

He said that with the "Shanghai Five" inevitably evolving from a meeting mechanism to a regional organization for multilateral cooperation, their cooperation will be expanded to a larger extent with greater influence across the world.
