Japan Telecom to Form Alliance With China TelecomJapan Telecom Co., Japan's third- largest telecom firm, has reached an agreement with China Telecommunications Corp. (China Telecom) to form an alliance, the Japanese firm said Tuesday.Details of the alliance will be worked out later, but the two companies will cooperate in the field of mobile phones and leased line services for corporate customers, company officials said. Under a memorandum signed by the two sides, the two telecom firms will focus on the mobile phone market in China and on the leased line services for Japanese companies with Chinese operations, the officials said. China Telecom is China's biggest fixed-line telecom firm. Ahead of China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), Japanese telecom companies have intensified their moves recently to extend their reach into the Chinese market. NTT Communications Corp. tied up with China Telecom last November to jointly provide their clients with international telecom services by using Internet technology. Earlier this month, KDDI Corp. announced the signing of an agreement to provide mobile phone and Internet connection technologies to China Unicom Ltd., China's second-largest telecom.
