Int'l Conference on Formal Linguistics Closes

China's first international conference on formal linguistics, a new study field in the country, closed Monday in this capital of Hunan Province.

More than 100 scholars and experts from a dozen countries and regions including China, the United States, Japan, Jordan and China's Taiwan attended the three-day conference and discussed syntax, phonology and linguistic practices.

Formal linguistics, a major part of modern language study, was established 40 years ago by the famous scholar Noam Chomsky.

Based on the biological theory of heredity, the purpose of this field of study is to reveal the mysteries between language and the human brain.

The conference was sponsored by Hunan Normal University, which plays a leading role in formal linguistics study in China.
