HK to Stage International Cricket Sixes

The International Cricket Sixes will be held in Hong Kong later this year, with a record prize money of two million HK dollars (256,410 US dollars), the Hong Kong Cricket Association announced here Monday.

Eight top playing teams, which are from Australia, England, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Pakistan (or Bangladesh) and China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will join the two-day event on November 10 and 11.

The eight teams will be drawn into two pools of four for the tournament which has been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. The top two sides in each pool will enter the semi-finals.

The first International Cricket Sixes was held in 1992 with the series coming to a halt in 1997. Pakistan won the first event and the 1997 edition, with England winning in 1993 and 1994, a strong South Africa side triumphing in 1995 and India picking up the trophy in 1996.

Cricket is a sport widely played within some Commonwealth countries. With the quick fire six-a-side format suiting the fast- pace of life in Hong Kong, the cricket sixes quickly became a popular fixture on the local scene.
