HK Lifeguards Net 10 Prizes at Arafura Games

Three lifeguards from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region netted a total of 10 prizes in the International Lifesaving Competition at the Arafura Games 2001 held in Darwin, Australia, the government announced Saturday.

These contestants from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) of Hong Kong won four gold medals, two silver medals and four bronze medals, at the competition held from May 19 to 26, 2001.

Held every two years, the Arafura Games is recognized as a leading international sporting competition in the Asia-Pacific region. Consisting of the Ocean Competition and the Still Water Competition categories, international lifesaving made its first appearance in this year's games.

Yuen Kai-lai from Hong Kong won a total of seven medals, including four gold, two silver and one bronze. He grasped his first two gold medals in the male beach sprint and male beach flags in the Ocean Competition category.

Yuen also did well in the Still Water Competition category with another two gold medals in the 4x50M manikin relay and 100M saving a manikin with fins, two silver medals in 50M saving a manikin and 100M dummy relay and one bronze medal in 4x50M rescue tube relay.
