Indonesian President Invited to Attend MPR Special SessionIndonesian People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) has sent two letters to President Abdurrahman Wahid, one of which invited the president to attend the MPR's special session on August 1, MPR Chairman Amien Rais said. The second letter invited the president to attend and present his accountability report to the MPR special session, Rais was quoted by the Antara News Agency Saturday as saying. Rais did not mention when the first letter was sent to the president. The second letter, dispatched on Friday morning, had appendixes containing the views forwarded by House of Representatives (DPR) factions at the House's plenary sessions that decided to issue the first and second memoranda of censure to the president, and recommended that MPR hold a special session. The letters' contents were quite elaborate and meant to serve as "raw material" to the president in preparing his accountability speech, Rais said. He said the MPR would not dictate the president on how to prepare his accountability report so that he had full liberty and latitude in determining how his report would be worded. About the fact that certain quarters in society were still questioning the constitutional basis for holding an MPR special session, Rais said their views should not be responded to excessively. He asserted the holding of an MPR special session had been agreed on by all of the MPR's leaders. |
