Ethiopian Newspaper Closed for Alleged Corruption Charge

Ethiopian police has closed down the editorial office of the daily Monitor newspaper following the arrest of its publisher and owner Fitsum Zeab Asgedom, who allegedly had involved in a corruption case.

However, the police has not yet given official explanation on the closure and why some other media institutes are also under police surveillance.

It was reported that Fitsum has appealed to the court for the reopening his newspaper because it has nothing to do with his alleged corruption activities.

The Monitor, established in 1993 and the first English daily in Ethiopia, publishes three times a week before becoming a daily a few months ago.

Fitsum is currently being accused of illegally dealing with the Ethiopian Privatization Agency to secure the purchase of Taitu Hotel, Gulele Soap Factory and Harer Printing Press.
